How important will Artificial Intelligence be in the future of work?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been making significant strides in recent years, and its impact on the future of work is becoming increasingly apparent.

From chatbots and virtual assistants, to self-driving cars and predictive analytics, AI is transforming various industries, and its potential is limitless. With the rapid progress in technology, it’s no surprise that AI is becoming a hot topic in all discussions. As machines become more intelligent and capable, many people wonder what this will mean for their jobs and the future of work.

What exactly is AI, and how does it work?

This could be a somewhat difficult definition to give because AI is constantly changing and updating. What is clear is that although AI is in everyone’s conversation, very few know how it works or what it does. There is no definition accepted by all, but we could say that AI is the ability of machines to mimic human learning, and also it takes it a step further by evolving and learning how humans reason. Machines take all the information they have and learn to perform tasks and improve them.

How does AI work?

For Artificial Intelligence to work, it needs data which means that the development of this technology goes hand in hand with others, such as Big Data, the Internet of Things, or the 5G mobile network. With all this information, AI creates patterns to process and learn. AI also uses algorithms, which are a series of instructions for machines to improve patterns that later AI draws from the controlled processing of information. In this way, the combination of algorithms and data makes the AI automatically learn and process all the information, focusing on one or several specific tasks.

Applications of AI in 2023

When you think of AI, everyone imagines super-advanced machines that will replace everyone’s work, but this technology is more frequent than many believe and is already in our daily life: you can get them in the voice assistant of a smartphone, automatic translations, internet search engines, and online shopping. Its reach is so broad that it is estimated that within five years it will generate more than 400 billion dollars, and grow by about 36% each year, according to a study by MarketsandMarkets.

What would be the applications of IA in 2023? IA has a whole world of possibilities, but these are the ones that are being applied right now:

  • The usage of chatbots such as ChatGPT and DALL-E. These are the famous chat systems focused on creating a conversion, text, or drawing through AI.
  • The “super apps or platforms allow you to add functionality and integrate services into a single solution for your users.
  • Work and focus on customer satisfaction through AI to give a shopping experience with less effort and more pleasant.
  • Its application will be important in the area of medicine and biotechnology. The medical sector has extensive data that can be applied to create predictive models about healthcare. Also, it has been shown that AI can be more effective and help doctors in some types of diagnostics

AI in the work environment

AI can be applied to optimize production and business operations. It can also improve productivity, enhance safety, increase workflows, and complement some processes. These uses are currently taking place mainly in the following fields:

  • Human Resources department.
  • Prospecting talent for companies.
  • Automation of repetitive tasks through the use of chatbots.
  • Enhancing workplace safety.
  • Improving customer service.

Impact of AI on the future of work

Whenever new technology appears that seems to be so incredible, the first natural reaction is to believe that it is going to replace the human, well there is nothing to worry about: AI is not coming for your job, at least not for now. As explained in a paper published by the MIT Working Group on the Future of Work, titled “Artificial Intelligence And The Future of Work” AI will continue to drive constant innovation that will sustain existing industries and even generate new sectors, leading to new jobs.

And although AI has managed to almost perfectly replicate human intelligence in performing certain tasks, it still has some limitations: AI programs have a “specialized” intelligence, meaning they can only solve one problem and perform one task at a time; additionally, this is a very rigid intelligence since they are not able to think beyond their programming or “think outside the box”. Humans have “generalized” intelligence which serves problem-solving, abstract thinking, and critical judgment that will never cease to be a primary factor in the labor force.

So, we can say that although AI is already a crucial part of our lives and will always remain so, it is created by humans for the use of humans, and human judgment will always be relevant in its use, as well as in all tasks and sectors of the working world.
